Photowalk: Trim February 20th
It’s February photowalk time (or rather it will be in a few weeks). This time we’re heading to Trim in Co. Meath for an afternoon of photography followed (if you choose to hang around) by an evening of drinking, piss-taking and maybe even a bit of music.
Meeting at the cannon in the car park at Trim Castle at noon but don’t fret if you’re late or lost, we’ll hang around for a bit for any late comers. For those of you that haven’t attended a photowalk before, have a read of the blurb on the site and remember to have a contact detail for someone you know is attending. To that end, you can get me on twitter (@rymus) if you’re coming on the day but get stuck.
Note: People attending this and future monthly photowalks should save the number +353 86 1551616 to their phones. This is a dedicated contact number for those who get lost or delayed, or people just wishing to find out information. The number will only be available on the day of and for the duration of the photowalk. If you don’t get through, keep trying!
Accommodation can be had in Brogans for €30 per person and yes, that includes breakfast. To book, call Brogans on 046 9431237 and quote ‘photowalk’ when booking to avail of the special rate. If you wish to book your own place to stay feel free to do so.
The rest of the trip is of the ‘highly secretive’ nature. Turn up, bring a warm jacket and maybe something to keep you dry. That’s all you’re going to need. For those of you that haven’t been to Trim before (I include myself in that), this promises to be a great walk. Very much like the January one was! Possibly less snow this time around though.
Julie, having been to Trim before, bestowed this wisdom on us.
Trim has a good few spots worth a look. There’s the castle, obviously, but also the tower in the field, a couple of old graveyards with beautifully weathered headstones, if you’re lucky the donkeys will come and say hello (bring them an apple or a carrot!) as well as a few wee horses that live in the surrounding fields. Just a short drive from the town centre there’s an abbey worth visiting, too.
Danny has put the following together for us, the makings of a great trip, cheers Danny!
12 – 12.30. Meet-up in Castle carpark beside the canon (big gun like thing)
12.30. Enter Trim Castle. There are many photo opportunities in the grounds. A guided tour of the keep will follow. It is advised NOT to bring tripods on the tour. Be prepared to leave your tripods in the car for the castle tour. Some guides seem to take exception to them and associate them with professional (commercial) photography. It’s worth packing a bean bag/mini tripod or another alternative. There are plenty of places to find support for your camera inside. That said you will probably need to use a slightly higher ISO. Wide angle lenses would also come in handy for the interior shots. There will also be an opportunity to get panoramic shots from the roof of the castle.
2.30 approx. Begin Boyne walk. This will be a pleasant amble along the Boyne beginning at the Yellow Steeple and St. Mary’s Abbey (a very historic building where Johathan Swift andRowan Hamilton once lived). The walk will continue on to through the Porchfield (from which my photoblog gets its name. Or is it the other way around!!) to Newtown, an old monastic settlement which played a major role for returning wounded during the Crusades. Here you will encounter the unique Jealous Man & Woman monument. This edifice, believe it or not, hold the cure for warts. All I will say is bring a safety pin and all will be revealed. There is a very old photogenic graveyard and other significant medieval buildings in this area and plenty of photo opportunities.
4.30 – 5.00 approx. After this walk we will explore the town itself. Like other towns around the country the economic situation has taken its toll and there are a number of empty premises. There are also many old buildings and a brand new architecturally interesting OPW building which is modelled on the Tara broach.
6.00 All meet up in Brogan’s on High Street for grub and drink. The rest of the evening will, I’m sure, look after itself.
Here’s a rough Google map of the route!
Enjoy and stay safe!!
Danny.
See you there!

I’m waiting for word on whether my local will do a B&B deal for the night. Grand pints, good grub and stagger into bed. Now that’s what all photowalks should end up like!! I’ll post as soon as I hear something.
Denis, Phil, Tommy – how about meeting up and planning a route for the day?

Would love to crawl as some of the others can do, but it’ll take me a bit longer
I have walked home after a session – and was sober at the end of it !!
Should be a good day’s shooting.
“Denis, Phil, Tommy – how about meeting up and planning a route for the day?” – Yep sounds good. Some evening or next weekend. We’ll talk more on twitter.

saw on twitter that photowalk.ie was meant for irish-based photogs. as i’m not irish-based, nor a real photog, i’m sorry to be having to by-pass trim again. hope all attending will have a great day.

Hey Aafke, Steve here – Irish-based just means that the photowalks organized through this site will be based in Ireland. Really it should say Ireland-based. We don’t care weather your Irish, English, Dutch, Vulcan or an Avatar! As long as you have a camera, like to meet other photogs, take some shots, share them, have a drink and all of that, then you’re qualified to come. The type of camera, the number and expense of your lenses is irrelevant too
Most of us are not full time professional photographers – again, this is for those interested in photography. We all learn something, we all get to share something and one’s ‘photographic status’ is neither here nor there (hope that translates!).
Pullandbang is quite right and I’ll work with @theelfyone to get the description changed to be more inclusive

@ aafke Don’t think Photowalk is aimed at Irish togs only and the Trim walk is open to all. I’m not a real tog either but I’ll be there.
You’ve got some great stuff on Pix.ie so you’re as much a photographer as the rest of us. So dust off your camera and make your way to Trim. You’ll be made very welcome and enjoy the day.

As ye can see I had a chat with the boss in Brogan’s and he is doing a really great deal at €30 B&B double or single. It really is a great spot and the food is wholesome and very good value too. I hope some can stay around and swill a few on Saturday night. There may well be music as well. I’ll be heading to a trad concert just up the road that night. It’s a memorial concert for a friend that died way too young but should be back in Brogan’s about 10.

Anyone wanting to avail of the deal, ring Brogan’s (046 9431237) and tell them you are on the photowalk to get the B&B deal. Don’t delay though. I don’t know how many rooms are left.

Brogans may only have 3 rooms at the ‘special rate’, but they certainly have more than that generally.
If you want to stay walking distance from Brogans then Castle Arch Hotel, Trim Castle Hotel (modern) or even 5min walk White Lodge B&B, knightsbrook is about 15-20 mins walk, others I don’t know.

actually highfield house comes in better than white lodge, it looks directly over the castle. missed that one.

Thanks, yarrumk.
Brogans appears to be booked solid (no rooms at the inn).
Castle Arch has nothing for the night either (according to their online booking system).
Booked at White Lodge looks to have the best rates and have no negative reviews on tripadvisor.
If anyone else needs a room call White Lodge. Todd , the owner, seems a nice enough fellow and has rooms.
Thanks again.

Right I’m booked into the White Lodge as the nice people in Highfield Lodge didn’t answer there phone all morning. So this means I’m going to a photo walk in Trim.

@trish & @sliding – White Lodge is lovely and is only a three minute walk to the pub – unfortunately it’s a 15 minute stagger home
