Danny
Many people have, and continue to post tributes to our dear friend Danny O’Brien who passed away
suddenly yesterday, 7th April 2010.
It wasn’t so long ago that he hosted a PhotoWalk in his home town of Trim, a town of which he was immensely proud. He was so delighted, as he rubbed his hands together with glee, at the large turnout of photographers on that frosty Trim morning. He was determined that his home town would make a lasting impression on everyone there and he certainly succeeded with that! For those who were there, it was their first time to meet Danny in person. But for those who knew him already, knew that when you met Danny you would never forget Danny! Larger than life, mischievous to a fault but a true gent in every way, his passion, insight and enthusiasm were altogether charming, captivating and inspirational.
It seems impossible to put into words how much he will be missed by our not-so-little photography community to which he contributed so much over the few years we knew him, but hopefully we made it known to him in that time how well he was liked, respected and appreciated. Our thoughts are now with his family.
I’m sure over time we’ll put something together in our own way but, in the meantime, the arrangements for Danny’s service can be found here.
So, sit back and take a moment to look back and appreciate Danny’s wonderful work on his blog Porchfield.com, on Pix.ie and over on Flickr. Danny’s ‘little corner of the Internet’, as he put it himself, will be all the brighter for the time you spend on it as will your experience there too!
If you have a post on your own web site that you’d like to share here, then please leave a link below in the comments (you’ll need to register first if you haven’t already).

Hello all,
Donall here Dannys Son.
On behalf of the family I want to thank you all so much for your kind words and wonderful photos.
This is really helping us get through the terrible time.
He loved photography so much and he loved the online communitys that he had so much respect for.
He will be missed, wheather is is calling us upstairs to look at his latest photograph, his ranting at the tv when when the “gobshites” were on, his big bear hugs or just his loving smile.
He will be missed terribly, he knew he was loved deeply by us and we knew he loved us. We dont have any regrets.
Love Phil, Kate Donall and Juno (the dog)
Nicely said Donall and thanks for sharing with us.
He’ll be sorely missed by a lot of people around here.
It was a pleasure to have known him and all of you over the years. You were great neighbours when we were round the corner from you.
I met a lot of the old neighbours over the past two days, Eugene McBride, Padraig Doyle, Peter Smith, Declan Clabby and Willie of course to name but a few. It was nice to reminisce on our early days in Elder Grove.
My deepest condolences to you, Kate and Phil (& Juno of course).
May Danny rest in peace and his memory live forever.
A very touching and very well put tribute.
Lovely tribute. So very true and more so for anyone who had the pleasure of meeting him.
Lovely sincere thoughts Julie & Stephen. What a man.
Thank you Julie, Ryan and Stephen for putting this truly wonderful and touching tribute here. I think everyone feels -no matter how long or how well they knew him- they’ve known Danny too short.
Touching…just touching…at a loss for words.
Well said Julie (and Stephen), I was sorry to have missed your Trim meet, I’m even sorrier now.
I can just imagine Danny as the heart and soul of that get together like any of the others I attended with him.
RIP.
The post was a collaborative effort between myself and Stephen, I don’t want to take credit for putting this stuff into words because frankly, words failed me and all I managed to write were the basics. Thanks to the contributors of the photos, too.
I hope what I can take from it is the example of how he lived his life and made such an impression – being proactive about changing the things he felt strongly about, being such a fantastic dad and husband, and making every one of us feel like we could call him a friend.
Lit a candle this morning for Dannie in my local church.
All my prayers and thoughts are with his family now.
Very thoughtfull
Lovely tribute Julie. He will be sorely missed. Its lucky we have so much to remember him by.
Nicely said Julie. He will be missed. x
Thank you Julie for a wonderful piece. Like others I will miss him dearly and will cherish his legacy evn more.
Well put Julie. I’ll always miss him.
Beautiful! Described him perfectly! A charming captivating man & full of divilment! Can’t believe you’re gone x
Lovely tribute Julie.
I’ve spent a lot of time in the last 24 hours reflecting on the nature of my friendships these days. and even though I didn’t get to meet Danny anywhere often enough, and missed out on the pleasure of being guided around his beloved Trim, I’ll miss his good humour and gentle leg pulling even more than his inspirational photographs.
So since I didn’t get a chance to say it to him, I’d like to thank the rest of my online photographer friends for brightening my days with their company and their photographs.
Rest in peace, Danny.
Darren
