Direction: Spire – down Henry Street to Jervis Centre – Jervis Street to Liffey – into Temple bar – on to Georges Street – TBC

The WDD Blue Monument challenge:
In 2010, over 900 monuments and buildings in 84 countries lit in blue on 14 November to raise awareness of diabetes and World Diabetes Day. As a result of the continued popularity of this initiative, it will continue to be a core component of the WDD campaign. In 2011, the blue lightings will take centre stage for all World Diabetes Day-related grass-roots activities and events, reinforcing the link between the colour blue and diabetes, and strengthening recognition of the Blue Circle as the global symbol of diabetes.
In Ireland, to date, the following Buildings will ‘Go Blue’ in support of Diabetes.

- Fire Restaurant at the Mansion House
- PricewaterhouseCoopers, IFSC
- The Convention Center, North Quay
- The Dublin Wheel, Point Village, East Wall Road

Diabetes Ireland plan on growing this list over the next two weeks, and if feasible any new additions will be added to the walk.

The Plan
The current plan is to meet at the Mansion House on Dawson Street between 6.45pm & 7pm on Monday 14th November. We will start by photographing Fire Restaurant from there we will walk to the IFSC to the PricewaterhouseCoopers building, then onwards to The Convention Centre and finally on to The Dublin Wheel. See below for the route.

Due to circumstances beyond the control of the Convention Centre and Diabetes Ireland, the Convention Centre will be going blue on 13th but are unable to use the blue lighting on 14th, so the Convention Centre will not now be a part of the walk. If anyone is around Dublin on 13th Nov, you might want to get some shots of the building in it’s blue lighting.

Diabetes Ireland has been in contact with all of the locations and so we will have no problem taking photographs. I’d like to thank Kate Moran for her assistance in doing this.

There is now a group on pix.ie “Diabetes Ireland WDD 2011″ for the event to enable everyone share their photos from the walk, just upload to pix.ie and use the tag WDD2011. Diabetes Ireland would also appreciate it if Photowalkers would allow them publish some photographs in their magazine (credit will be given) contact details will be available on the night for those willing to provide some of their shots.

If you are talking part, warm clothing and comfortable walking shoes are recommended. A tripod could be useful too.

Diabetes Ireland have just announced that they would like to feature the best photograph from the Blue Monuments photowalk on the front cover of of ‘Diabetes Ireland’ magazine.

The route we will be following is:
Starting at Fire Restaurant beside the Mansion House, we will then walk across Molesworth St to Kildare St (turn left) down Kildare St on to Leinster St (turn right) continue to Lincoln Place, around to Westland Row, continue along Lombard St to City Quay (turn right) continue along Sir John Rogerson’s Quay (at this point we can photography Beckett Bridge with Dublin Wheel behind it) spend some time in this area shooting across the river towards PWC, DCC. Cross the Beckett Bridge (turn right) travel along the quays to the Dublin Wheel. Around the wheel & East Wall road. End of walk. Personally I will probably talk the Luas from the Point Village stop back to Connolly.

Uniquely for an art exhibition all of the work (with the exception of Brian Maguires work in S18) can be photographed freely, giving visitors the ability to record how they see and experience the exhibition through their eyes and lenses. Photowalkers securing a limited ticket to this event will have complimentary access to the the beautiful Earlsfort Terrace Venue on all floors, and all of the exhibition of course. (Usual single ticket price is €15)

Come along to Paul Freeney’s 12th Photowalk in a hugely historic and peaceful part of the city. Hear interesting facts spanning over 1,000 years amid some of Europe’s most beautiful buildings and gardens.

The walk will take in:

• Heuston Station,
• Parkgate Street & the new Dublin Criminal Courts,
• The Wellington Monument, famous for being ignored.
• Sarah Bridge, the most beautiful of the older Liffey bridges.
• The Dublin Rowing Clubs,
• The War Memorial Gardens, a national treasure.
• Bully’s Acre Graveyard,
• The Royal Hospital, with beautiful formal gardens.

A stop for a late lunch is planned two thirds of the way through our walk at a lovely coffee shop opposite Kilmainham Jail & The Royal Hospital also has a good coffee shop.

Ireland’s Eye has no shelter so it is advisable to dress accordingly, wet gear & sun protection are both advisable. It is also advisable to bring a picnic & water to keep you going for the day.
The duration of the trip is up to individuals as the Ferry makes many return trips each day,

Cost of Ferry is €15 per adult and €10 for children.
Places for this trip are limited so make sure you get your name down early !

Carnesore II Photowalk

Sunday July 24th at 12.30. Meet at the Lighthouse Bar, Carne Beach Caravan Park, Carne, County Wexford.

Last July we hosted our biggest event to date, a Photowalk from Carne Beach in Wexford to an old Graveyard, along a wildlife path, along beaches, through fields to an amazing windfarm & on to the spectacular corner of Ireland that is known as Carnesore Point.

The walk was on one of the best days of the year and was attended by people & families who encompasse…d all levels of photography and several who just came along for the fun of it. The 41 attendees came from as far away as Dublin on the day as well as most Counties in the South East.
It was such a succesful and enjoyable day that we have decided to repeat the exercise this year !!!
I know that many people, including ourselves are excited by the very idea of having a second Carnesore Walk. If you did not manage to make it last year I can only encourage you to consider it as a ‘must do’ this year.

Please note there are some paths alongside some small cliffs and the sea at Carnesore has unforgiving waves and currents, so children, although very welcome must be supervised.

• Dogs are also welcome, we had two with us last year.
• Walkers need to be able to negotiate some small fences and uneven ground.
• It is advisable to bring a packed lunch, water, sun protection and clothes suitable for whatever the day might bring.
• Toilet facilities are only available at the start and the end.

The plan is to meet up in the car park behind the Bus Eireann depot. [Across from McDonalds]. The car park charges are only €2 for the day on Saturdays.

To give everyone time to get here, we’ll start the walk at 11am & head into the town. We will finish around Millmount [known locally as the Cup 'n Saucer] at about 5pm. Funny enough, there’s a pub just beside Millmount, so you can quench your thirst at that stage.

Places in the town that we’ll visit include the head of St. Oliver in St. Peter’s church on West street, the old graveyard of St. Peters Church of Ireland, the De Lacy bridge crossing the river Boyne. Also in the plan are the docks area & well known Ship Street. We could even take photos of the swans on the river, if that’s your thing.

I’ve arranged access to Millmount with it’s view of the town as well as a tour of the museum if anyone would like to have fun with low light photography. Also, there’s a guided tour of the town by a member of the “Old Drogheda Society”. There would be a small token charge of a few euro per person for the guides services.

More on this when all is confirmed.
