Advice

Attending a photowalk may seem daunting at first, particularly if it’s your first time out.
You may ‘know’ the people online, but have never met them in ‘real life’. This just seems plain weird, right? Well, it is, but you know what? These people are just like you, they share the same interest in getting out there, getting the shot and sharing in the experience. In many ways it’s like a first night out at a new club – or – your first day at school!
The thing is, if you do go you’ll be very happy you did and quite possibly hooked thereafter! It’s great fun.
So what do you need to know? Here’s a list of tips…
- Look at the event details carefully and, if you can come along, hit the Join this event button right under the map.
- Help spread the word and encourage people you know to come along (this makes it a little less daunting!)
- Check the map for the meeting point and to get directions.
- Remember to note the meeting time!
- If you’ve any questions, add a comment and one of us will get back to you.
- You don’t need a big, expensive camera. You can even use your phone and if you check out the photoblogs, you’ll see plenty of superb shots taken in this way. Don’t be intimidated by those with gear you could swap for a car. Remember, a good shot is in the eye, not the camera!
- Prepare for the weather, it is Ireland after all. Wear comfy and possibly waterproof footwear – and a plastic bag to cover your camera will allow you to shoot in the rain, too.
- What should you bring?
- Your camera of course (dslr, film, video, phone…).
- A camera bag, so you have somewhere to put your camera when we end up in the pub.
- Fully charged batteries and spares if you have them, and particularly if it’s cold! Others might have spares if you don’t – just ask.
- Extra memory cards, to keep you going for the whole day.
- A lens cloth, rocket blower or lens pen is useful but not essential.
- A tripod, for night walks. Sometimes there will be a few available to borrow – just ask.
- A light snack and a bottle of your favourite lubrication if the location is more remote than in a city!
- A mobile phone, and the phone number of at least the walk organiser or some of the attendees. Yes, walkers have gotten lost!
It’s no more than common sense, and it’s no big deal if you forget something. Just be prepared to join in and have fun
